Karuna Thurman Uma, who was born April 29, 1970 is an American actress. Leading roles in a variety of films ranging from romantic comedies and dramas to science fiction and action movies. Thurman was born in Boston to Robert Thurman and Nena von Schlebrügge, and raised primarily in Amherst, Massachusetts and Woodstock, New York. His father gave his children a Buddhist education, and is named after a Dbuma Chenpo (in Tibetan, "db" is silent; Mahamadhyamaka from Sanskrit, meaning "Great Middle Way"). For religion, who now calls himself an agnostic. She has three brothers, Ganden (b. 1971), Dechen (b. 1973), and Mipam (b. 1978), and half-sister named Taya (b. 1960), from a previous marriage of his father. She and her siblings spent time in Almora, India, during childhood, and the Dalai Lama sometimes visited their home.
It is described as having been an awkward and introverted young man who was teased about his big body, angular bone structure, huge feet and unusual name (sometimes with the name "Uma Karen" instead of his birth name) . He attended Amherst schools. At age eight, he discovered his love of comedy.
